Top Ten Windows Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts can save a huge amount of time which of course increases productivity. It doesn’t matter which operating system you use, the benefits are huge and they are really easy to learn.

1. Ctrl + C and Ctrl + V (Copy and Paste)

These are probably the most well-known shortcuts. Use Ctrl + C to copy a selected item (text, images, files) and Ctrl + V to paste it elsewhere. (The + simply means hold down another key, you do not need to go near the + key.)

2. Alt + Tab (Switch Between Open Applications)

Quickly switch between your open applications with Alt + Tab. Keep holding Alt and press Tab until you reach the window you want.

3. Windows Key + D (Show Desktop)

Need to see your desktop quickly? Press Windows Key + D to minimize all open windows instantly. You can also click in the far bottom right of the screen to do the same thing.

4. Ctrl + Z and Ctrl + Y (Undo and Redo)

Made a mistake? Ctrl + Z undoes your last action. To redo, press Ctrl + Y.

5. Windows Key + L (Lock Your PC)

Stepping away from your PC? Quickly lock it by pressing Windows Key + L to protect your work.

6. Ctrl + Alt + Delete (Access Security Options)

This powerful combination brings up the security options, including Task Manager, Log Out, and Lock. (You can open Task Manager directly with Ctrl + Shift + Esc)

7. Windows Key + E (Open File Explorer)

Quickly access your files and folders by opening File Explorer with Windows Key + E.

8. Ctrl + Shift + Esc (Open Task Manager)

Directly open the Task Manager to manage your applications and monitor system performance.

9. Windows Key + S (Search)

Need to find something fast? Windows Key + S opens the search bar for quick access to files, applications, and settings.

10. Ctrl + Alt + Tab (View Open Applications)

Similar to Alt + Tab, but this shortcut lets you view all open applications without holding down the keys.

A top ten list is too limited to do the subject justice, however, this list covers the vast majority of shortcuts I use. If you would like a more extensive list then here is Microsoft’s support page on the subject.
